Rupert is a striking young cow who came to the sanctuary in 2016 as a very young, very fragile baby. Discovered on a roadway as an unrecognizable ball of fluff covered in road rash, a kind girl in her prom gown stopped to check on him. Realizing his dire need for food, water, and shelter, she kindly chose Rupert’s freedom over her own high school dance and took him home to be loved and nourished by her family.
While we prepared space for his arrival at the sanctuary, Rupert very willingly drank from his bottle, tested his wobbly legs, and received ‘round the clock care from his kind foster family, and it was determined that when he was picked up he was only a day or two old.
When he arrived at the sanctuary, Rupert was confident and charismatic, and his favorite activities were running with human friends in the open grass, playing with a lamb named Marble, and knocking on doors and windows with his nose at bottle time. Rupert was likely planned for veal, but instead, he is an affectionate, funny, still growing boy. Now, a fully grown Holstein, Rupert spends his days with the rest of the cow herd, grazing, basking in the sunshine, and enjoying Sanctuary life. He enjoys visits from humans and often approaches the fence when a friendly hand reaches out to stroke his horns and often returns the gesture with a slurpy kiss.
