FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

The single most important action you can take to protect the planet is simply to choose plant-based foods—even just reducing your consumption of meat and dairy a little bit will have a huge impact on the planet. This is because meat and dairy production require shocking amounts of land, water, and energy compared to plant foods. In fact, you can do more for the planet by going meatless on Mondays than by switching to a totally local diet The average American eats about eight ounces of meat every day—45 percent more than the U.S.Department of Agriculture’s recommended amount. By choosing to eliminate meat and dairy from your diet just one day a week, you can:

  • Save nearly 400 gallons of water (which means you can save 20,748 gallons of water per year)
  • Reduce your carbon footprint by 8 pounds (adding up to saving over 416 pounds of CO2 annually)
  • Save 72 square feet of land from deforestation, over-grazing, and pollution from pesticides and fertilizers (this means you save 3,744 square feet – nearly an acre!- of land annually)
