AYLA AND HER BABIES ARLEN AND PEYTON

A mother goat with her two babies

Bitter wind cut sharply across the goat’s face as she lay, helpless, on the roadside. She was alone, unable to stand, her body already giving way. A woman stopped, lifted her into her car, and brought her straight to the clinic.

When Ayla arrived, it was clear how much she had endured. Her hooves were so overgrown and infected that she could not stand. Her body was emaciated, starved to the point where survival itself seemed uncertain. She had a broken and infected chest bone, pneumonia, parasites, and she was heavily pregnant.

Even in those first moments, there was no single path forward—only a series of decisions, made one at a time, to try.

At the clinic, Ayla gave birth to her babies.

Shortly after, we nearly lost her when her ketones crashed and her body began to fail. One of her babies was born weak, his small body marked by bleeding tumors along his leg and spine. Everything about those early days felt fragile, as though life itself was hanging by a thread.

When Ayla’s chest wound would not heal, we brought her to New Bolton Center, where a multidisciplinary team stepped in, working with care and determination to try to save her. In the end, the prognosis was clear. Her chances of recovery were extremely poor. The only possible path forward would require months of hospitalization and multiple surgeries, with no guarantee that she would ever fully recover.

So we brought her home.

Not because she was healed, but because we believed she deserved to be surrounded by care, by familiarity, and by love, no matter how much time remained.

But Ayla did not die.

She lived.

Slowly, almost imperceptibly at first, she began to get better. Her body responded. Her strength returned. The infections receded. Over time, what once seemed impossible began to take shape.

Today, radiographs show that her chest bone has fully healed. She has more than doubled her body weight. Though her hooves remain misshapen, she moves through the pasture with ease, fully present in a life that once seemed out of reach.

She is a mother. She is steady. She is at peace.

And perhaps most remarkably, she has become a steady source of comfort to others. Animals and people alike seem to seek her out, drawn to something in her presence that cannot be explained, only felt.

Ayla’s story is not only about survival. It is about what can happen when care is offered again and again, even when the outcome is uncertain.

Because of you, she was given that chance.

And because of you, she is here—living, breathing, and reminding us, in her own way, what is possible.
