RESCUE HEN: DAGNY

Meet Dagny – a Scandinavian name meaning “new day,” symbolizing hope, renewal, and fresh beginnings.

When Dagny arrived at Indraloka, life was still overwhelming.

She was one of the first hens to be picked on by the larger flock. Already exhausted from life on a commercial egg farm, she simply couldn’t keep up. To give her a chance to rest and recover, we moved her into a quieter stall in our medical barn alongside two other hens, Simone and Nova, who also needed extra care.

Sometimes healing begins with something as simple as feeling safe.

Over the following days, the three hens formed an unlikely little family. They rested together, recovered together, and slowly began to trust their new surroundings.

Today, Dagny has become something unexpected: a caregiver herself.

Whenever another frightened or injured hen joins the recovery stall, Dagny is often one of the first to greet her. Instead of chasing newcomers away, she welcomes them. If another hen settles into a nest, Dagny gently pulls wood shavings toward her, carefully arranging a comfortable place to rest. She seems to understand that healing is easier when you’re not alone.

Dagny is also growing more comfortable with people every day. Her curiosity often gets the better of her, and she’s beginning to approach her caregivers with cautious confidence—a remarkable transformation for a hen who arrived so frightened.

Thanks to compassionate supporters, Dagny’s story is no longer about surviving.

It’s about healing.
